It is very stormy today. During our morning walk we had 2 trees fall and quite a few branches.
One if them I surprisingly caught on video. It must have happened at the other side of the meadows outside the house.

The good news, however, is that we might get snow at higher altitudes. Tomorrow I will drive back South to the Black Forest and I would be super happy to see some snow 😊
So far we had only twice, before Christmas, snow. Only the few tall mountains in the Black Forest kept their peak covered in snow. Many other skiing areas just have a few patches remaining.

The hope of some snow makes me happy. If Ninja would know he would be happy as well. We all know how Ninja expresses his joy, but snow is always a level higher.
Usually I have to fire him up to do some goofy jumps or dashing around… But In the snow he does that by choice on his own. There is no reason to just do a 1.2m/4ft high jump other than joy 😊

Even if it is at times difficult to rank things that Ninja really enjoys, movements like this however speak loud 😄
.
Ninja generally seems prefer variety. If you want to give him something nice, he will love it the very first time the most. A few times in a row and Ninja will leave it on the ground ^^
This makes it difficult to do something really nice for him.
.
Tomorrow we will see Frank and Raphaela again as well as Kaihu, Hadez and Roja. Hopefully, they miss us as much as we miss them and the reunion will be fun 😊

Sandstone Rocks, I love them. They remind me of my home area, the #wasgau
This rock is on the way to the Wegeln-castle on the 4 castle tour from France to Germany.
I will post a wide version as a story 😊 Even in winter there is a warm look to these rocks.

Today, we have been at a second best, the Morgenbachtal close to Bingen. It is such a beautiful area, sadly I only took my long focal length lens and it was totally useless there.
Shorter focal lengths show more of the environment, while longer focal lengths are for portraits
.
In a nutshell it is like this:

So, I was able to make nice portraits of Ninja, but was unable to include the beautiful area 😄
I need to go back another day. At least I was able to share more of our walk via stories today 😊

I just returned and am already ready to head out and meet Izzy in Budenheim in a bit.

This week passed so fast. There is still so much to do, but a huge pile of work ahead. Thought I would have a bit more time for everything, inclusive meeting some people.
There is our morning pack walk, which I enjoy a lot, but in the afternoon I rarely manage to abandon my work load to meet up with other people.

Today the Forester confirmed that the animal that has been found the other day was indeed a wolf. While I am sad that the wolf died, it is quite intriguing that we do indeed half a passerby wolf apparently he came from the south, the Alps, then to France ( Vosges ) and tried to cross over to the North.
I mean of all the places in Germany I can see the spot it was found from my balcony at the other side of the meadows, maybe 650m away.

I am not afraid, I am in awe. The forest here is too small to sustain even a single wolf, too many people walk here. They would be passing through.
Hopefully the next wolf will have more luck. If he had made it to the Westerwald in the other side of the river or the Hunsrück towards the west he could have found a great place to live.
I wonder how blind we often walk through our world. There is so much beauty around us if we are willing to look for it… Maybe I crossed his tracks without noticing, just because I never bothered to look.

Does Ninja like to play?
.
In a nutshell, no. The only dogs Ninja loves to play with are females, when they are in heat. Everything else is wasted effort 😜
If he really likes the other dog, he might play a minute or two, if we fire him up for it.
There is not even a hand full dogs that manage to get Ninja to initiate play.
One of them was Fine, a female from our daily pack walk. She managed to win him over with lots of energy and teasing him a bit. It was so interesting to watch as Ninja played really rough with her and she loved that. If any other dog played with her like that she would scold the dog 😄
The dog on the picture is Smilla, she scolded Ninja the first day they met and Ninja was really resentful about that. Even months after she got to like him and also protected Ninja from other dogs he would only reluctantly play with Smilla if we pushed for it.
It took more than 6 months before he forgave Smilla for her initial behaviour and eventually got to like her and after like 15 months started to play a bit more daring with Smilla as well.

Very rarely – I have not finished the sentence „Ninja does not really like to play! – when he initiates play for some reasons. Sometimes even with make dogs and I am super happy when it comes to that.

While we still do not have snow at least the day started with fog. At these temperatures this means that every tiny drop will freeze and create beautiful hoar frost.
One of my favorite pictures is a Zen-Ninja in Hoar Frost. I took that other picture 3 years ago after multiple freezing cold days of fog. So I am hoping I can recreate and improve that picture I am talking about.
This picture has been taking this morning. You can see that the frost is still tiny but it does give an amazing look overall. Possibly if we are lucky this will improve the next days.

Ninja has not eaten for a few days now again. I think there is a female in heat in the area, possibly even the one right next door. Ninja stops to sniff and lick everywhere and constantly nags me to get outside. Even right away as we returned home from our morning pack walk 🤔
.
Last night I gave up my food, because I was not certain if he just did not like his 🦆 He just took my chicken, I was so happy that he would eat now, and placed it outside and laid next to it.
I though, great this is what you gave up today’s dinner for 😆
No worries I just baked some potatoes, I won’t starve this quick. Got some reserves, too 😄
I am not worried about Ninja, he has these phases from time to time and I think it is usually, as it is now, a female in heat that keeps his mind occupied. This would also explain Ninja being distracted the past few days.

On a cold winter morning I am in love with frost and the light. The crunching sound of frozen dirt beneath the feet… I also love breath… Can you see all structures and little swirls? I think it is so beautiful.
.
This morning I noticed the magic of the cold on a sign in the forest. The sun was warming the frosted sign and slowly the frost vapored away. It looked as if it was burning.
I also find it interesting that frost and heat feel the same in the first moment.
.
Ninja is also enjoying our packwalks. Probably less for the nature and light, but for the people and the dogs. This morning we were 8 dogs. He does not really interact a lot with the dogs, but he is always super happy to join up. Even if he hears voices or barks from the packwalk as video he is getting all excited.

Here is the picture I made earlier on the little dam in #budenheim
You can check our story for a little video of the area.
Especially in spring and summer it is a beautiful spot to be and take pictures. Even in summer these trees drop water on top of the little dam which is supposed to keep the water in the upper side arm of the river Rhine.
Due to the humidity there is lots of moss and dense growth which makes this place nice and cool even in the hottest summer day.
I just love the trees at either side that help to frame Ninja so nice. In summer there are deep browns and greens for the plants and moss, while there is also a lot of blue and yellow from the river and the sun.
You can find plenty of pictures on my feed that I took there as it is one of my favorite and ’secret‘ spots.

Of course I wanted to go there today and look after it. So many things have changed and especially the forest next to where I live is in a really bad shape. Large portions of the forest are being cut down because of bark beetles.
Fortunately though this spot remains untouched.

The forester called me a couple of days ago, when I was in the Black Forest, asking me if my dog was ok as they found a wolfy looking dog dead next to a road.
It runs out we actually had a wolf here that got hit by a vehicle and then perished. It made me feel so sad… The thought that it might have been Ninja, but also that a young wolf has died.
I wondered what she was doing here and wondered if she came from the Westerwald a lower mountain region to the north or probably from the Hunsrück, a lower mountain region to the west. Doubt that she felt comfortable in our city forest, which is not very big and full of humans and dogs. Also wondered if she may have been pregnant 😕 Poor animal…

This weekend the forecast says snow, but so far I have not seen any sign of it. The mountains at the other side of the river Rhine, it is the South Black Forest, are covered in clouds.
The webcams at the Feldberg, the tallest mountain in the Black Forest just show fog… Sadly I believe snow will come later today or overnight, but by then I will again be far away from here.
I still did not recuperate from our trip to France notice how I avoid communicating with people in general and even more so with the ones that are somewhat close to me.
There is so much to do at the moment and I just can’t focus. I am certain, spending some time within my own 4 walls in Mainz will help to recuperate.
It does just feel so bad when you can’t reply, knowing the other party probably does not understand the reasons, that it has nothing to do with them, or my thoughts about them. So for everyone that feels targeted here, I am sorry and will answer the next days.

Meanwhile enjoy this picture of Ninja in Bernau, that we took exactly one year ago. From this series I never liked my edits, but I feel this one is actually quite ok. Just love to see Ninja’s happiness.

„How tall is Ninja?“ is one of the Questions I receive a lot. So I figured I could receive Your perception here 😆
.
We wandered at the Dinkelberg today where I saw this giant-sized park bank today. You can see the little steps at either side which are just a bit above knee height tall 😊
.
Ninja is a very tall Husky, even a little above breed standard 😊 But he is not the tallest I have met, but when we meet standard sized Huskies I am often surprised how small they look next to him.
.
I find it really difficult to focus on the text today. I am still recovering from our round trip to the Normandy and will take a nap now 😆😴

Ninja still misses Nox. But I have done my best to distract him. Took him to meet old and new friends and last night when I arrived at Hadez and Kaihu he started eating again ( which he had not done since Saturday ).
.
Slowly we are returning to our daily routine and after the more than 2100km I caught up wit sleep 😊
People often ask me if I mind the driving, must have been the question I heard the most the past days, but actually I don’t mind at all.
I love long periods of concentration, it is one of my strengths and I love seeing new places.
The latter part worked really well. I did want to keep the costs as low as possible and tried to avoid the ‚toll roads‘ in France. The Nissan Navigation as well as OSMAnd+ Navigation Systems were extremely bad though. You would not believe the kind of roads I was driving… There was a 15km part where I drove through a forest on a dirt road. Every minute I expected a hunter or Forester to stop me. But the 2 Navigation Systems lead me this road simultaneously. I decided to use Google which shortened my trip to Paris by 2 hours over the other systems. Did not expect that.
.
For over 150km I road road that most likely had not seen a German since a very long time 😆 so small that when a car came from the other side we had to drive over the gras.
I am really not used to this in Germany. Sure we have some roads that are equally small but they lead from main roads to isolated Houses and not for 150km 😆
I saw deer families and one especially impressive one with huge antlers that wondered as much as I did what I was doing here. Also met some wild boar that did not even bother when I passed.
From the trip I think I loved this part the most, even though it was very tense drive.
I am also glad to be home, expected Ninja and Hadez to not get along because Ninja smelled after Box, but the opposite was the case. Hadez was super happy to see the both of us as well as Kaihu and Roja. I think Frank and Raphaela, too 🤪 I did not dare to ask 😆
