Today was one of these days. However, it was simply too warm… I had an appointment in the city and thought I could combine that with a nice hike along the lakes and through the orchards.
I noticed at the start that Ninja was not motivated due to the pressuring heat today. We became slower and slower and even before we reached the lakes Ninja decided to stop and laid down… He was panting hard, his tongue was red and the mucosa was quite pale.
I knew these were signs for overheating and knew I had to help him cool down. At first, I looked for cool place in the shadows. While he was drinking water, I used my shoes to kick away leaves and the top layer of earth. A few centimeters below earth usually is significantly cooler and humid. Then I laid Ninja into the hole, sprinkled some water on him, and sat down beside him. Ninja felt better after a few minutes.
I am not entirely sure why this happened, because it was not that warm and we were hiking through the forest (many shadows). Ninja usually deals quite well with heat, but possibly the 75-95% humidity prevented proper cooling through panting.
Sadly, I had to cancel the appointment; I really dislike doing that… Fortunately, Ninja is already feeling much better.
I am writing this, so you can learn from my mistake… Even if it is not super warm, pay attention to your dog. This could have become much worse.
