Dog Training Thursday #002

Post 2 of the series „How do you train Ninja?!“ #ninjatrainingthursday by Canis Indipendicus

Teaching Ninja new tricks, I use reward marker. Every time a dog does something you have asked for, it will either do it right or do it wrong. When it is done, it is important that you mark that behavior with a reward marker so that the dog knows it was what you were asking.

A reward marker can be a signal, visual effect or sound. Most people use a verbal cue, or a clicker, as their reward marker, but you can also use a thumbs up or flash of light. If using a verbal cue, it should be short, easy to say and in a consistent tone. For Ninja, I use „yes“ if he has completed the task partly or completely.

It is important that the reward signal is well-conditioned, therefore it should be established in short sequences with several iterations. Using a reward marker should always be combined with a reward, e.g. food or play.
